Powerful Gales Leave Tens of Thousands Without Power in the Island Nation

Storm damage in New Zealand
Locals advised to remain inside as powerful gusts strike the country.

Severe gusts reaching velocities of as high as 155km/h (96mph) have caused approximately 90,000 properties lacking electricity and led agencies to halt more than 100 air travel services, based on domestic outlets.

These gusts are affecting the whole South Island and lower areas of the northern region, per the national weather agency.

The nation's agencies have announced infrequent high-level wind alerts - the most severe warning - in key areas such as Wellington and Canterbury.

People have been urged to stay indoors, stay off roads, and prepare for more utility disruptions.

Widespread Impact and Crisis Measures

The power cut appears to be affecting households mainly in the southern region, although authorities report that energy was being restored progressively.

Local media have reported that in some places structures have suffered roof damage, and power lines and trees have been toppled by the winds.

In Wellington, a person was lost his life after being struck by a falling limb at a frequent walking route on earlier this week.

Also in the capital, a female was swept into moving cars on a street by a powerful blast, in a event that was filmed in a viral dashcam video.

Flights in and out of the city have been cancelled because of the winds, and some roads and libraries are shut down.

At the same time Canterbury officials have issued a state of emergency, to facilitate recovery activities.

Labor Protests During Harsh Weather

The powerful gales on Thursday occur while numerous of teachers, doctors and other public workers are engaged in what has been termed a "major walkout", demanding higher wages and enhanced employment terms.

Yet the extreme weather has compelled them to modify some of their plans, with various open-air gatherings shifted to interior venues or cancelled.

Comparable winds are impacting the neighboring country, bringing a heatwave to the remote areas.

Authorities have announced burning restrictions for fear of bushfires.
