Pat Cummins Set to Play a Major Role in Iconic Rivalry
The pace bowler has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an impressive average.
The Australian selection chief the selector has stated that skipper Cummins will play a "major part" in the upcoming England-Australia contest.
Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.
Previous updates from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series kicking off on the 21st of November in the WACA.
He revealed that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of taking part.
"We know that the clock is ticking and various factors at play, not just the back issue, but additional elements," he commented.
"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a major part. Ideally from the opening match. If not, we'll adjust."
Injury History
He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India recently after medical tests showed a lower back issue.
There is a track record of back injuries, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in four years.
The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the series.
He mentioned that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the initial match.
Contingency Plans
If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.
The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against India as a safety move because of discomfort in his torso.
He labeled it as a "slight concern and mentioned that Green will play in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."
"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the first Test as an dual-role player," he elaborated.
"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs anyway. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for another day, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
