Coordinated British-French Airstrike Hits IS Munitions Store in the Syrian region
British Air Force Typhoon jets have joined forces with French warplanes in a combined operation targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the British defence ministry.
The site, located using surveillance, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was situated in hills just north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.
"Our fighter planes employed Paveway IV guided bombs to target a series of entry passages down to the depot... early reports suggest the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.
There was no sign of any civilian impact in the attack late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.
The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.
The Islamic State group - also known as the so-called Islamic State - imposed militant control over large swathes of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.
"This action underscores our UK leadership, and determination to operate in unison with our allies, to stamp out any revival of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary remarked.
British military aircraft have performed patrols over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of Islamic State after its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.
"I must thank every member of British forces who took part in this strike for their professionalism and their bravery," the Defence Secretary said. "Including them were a great many British troops on duty over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to take out terrorist threats who endanger our way of life, highlights how our armed forces are prepared to act, continuously, protecting the UK within its borders and strong abroad."
Last December, the United States armed forces conducted what it called a "massive strike" against Daesh sites in the country, following an ambush claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.
The UN says Islamic State still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in both countries.
